CONTEMPORARY MEDALS
FORMS AND ARTISTIC THEORY
MEDALHA
CONTEMPORÂNEA – FORMAS E TEORIA ARTÍSTICA
José Teixeira
The plastic arts are the materialisation of
thought and feeling, united by whatever two- or three-dimensional basic material
the artist chooses to work with. Unlike painting and sculpture - art forms that
saw a break away from the stigma of manual labour during the Renaissance period,
placing the status of the artist on a par with that of the intellectual - medals
are still considered an inferior art form, more a product of craft-work than
a vehicle for the expression of aesthetic thought and feeling, capable of making
its own social statement.
Evidently this is not a question of the size of a medal - quite the opposite.
It is quality, not quantity, that is of the essence here. What counts in medal-making
is the relationship between the product itself and its public in the wider sense
of the word. In other words, it is a question of taste, which is itself steeped
in and influenced by the history of art and the development of ideas and aesthetics.
Having thought a great deal about this, both as an artist and a theorist, I
have come to the conclusion that the problem lies in the lack of theoretical
reflection regarding medals, a lack that exists despite the existence of medal-making
as one of many valid artistic genres within the plastic arts. Although integrally
connected to its sister forms - painting and sculpture - it is still very much
the poor relation, the Cinderella of the visual arts.
Here in Portugal medal-making has begun to shake itself free of its historical
legacy, in so much as it is a recognised course of study (albeit optional) at
Lisbon University's Faculdade de Belas Artes [1]. In the 1990s particularly,
due to the work of Professor Helder Batista, the medal was reborn and a younger
generation of sculptors were enthused by the medium, which became known as a
field that employed innovative technological and artistic perspectives and was
finding its own unique space in the world of contemporary art.
Nowadays, with the present blossoming of group and individual exhibitions, the
long-awaited goal of modernisation is being attained - modernisation, born out
of a spirit of vitality and curiosity, a final break away from earlier formal
constraints. The adoption of other semantic and technological vocabularies has
been made possible by the medal-makers' own sense of poetry and theoretical
reflections, which have nurtured the process of creativity, thereby contributing
to the revival of this art form.
It is in the light of this development that this text has been written. It is
intended to reach out to a wider audience, and is based on thoughts published
in the catalogues of two different exhibitions held in 2002.
THE CONVENTIONS OF PLANES [2]
When speaking of medals collectively, it is necessary to examine a whole range
of activities that together constitute what is commonly known as medal-making.
In so doing, one is performing a purely normative, abstract exercise.
It can be seen that from the beginning of the twentieth century an unquestioned
definition of the medal existed according to a common consensus. Today this
does not apply, because the artists' own individual interpretations and readings
of the world have broadened, breaking away from the earlier traditions surrounding
this artistic genre. This is due in the first place to the poetic nature of
individual projects, which has truly revolutionised contemporary work and left
behind the constraints of the past and historical and social certainties.
But in a sense what one witnesses nowadays is often a sort of linguistic insolvency
that rarely moves away from repetition and stereotypes or goes beyond the cliché
of novelty while still presuming to be modern. On examining modern medals, one
notices that proposals concerning form oscillate between two archetypes. There
is the marie biscuit, recognisable by its circular form and two parallel faces
(obverse and reverse), with its pictogram and written message. And there is
the knick-knack or bibelot type, a paradigm that originated in the asymmetrical
compositions of the Baroque period, in a climate of greater three-dimensional
richness.
Nevertheless, despite the interminable polemics that generally surround the
interpretations of the medallic form by individual artists, one can try to pick
out certain invariables in these conceptions, and thereby attempt to establish
a normative body which allows one to classify in an objective manner the concept
of the medal as a specific artistic form, a specific autonomous artistic genre
at variance from other plastic art forms.
It seems appropriate at this point to mention some of the factors that constitute
these differences. Firstly, the medal is a space for coded information. Secondly,
its scale is designed according to the size of a normal human hand, giving it
a more intimate quality; it is an object that can be passed from hand to hand,
conceived, so to speak, anthropologically, from the human form. As to the configuration
of the medal itself, this can be classified into two different types. The first
harks back to elementary geometric structures and is generally a circle, square
or rectangle in shape. The second has unexpectedly varied edges that are neither
uniform nor regular. In both cases we are looking at a relatively small spatial
volume, which in the first instance is defined by perfect geometric forms and
parallel surfaces (the obverse and reverse) linked to each other by the thickness
of the piece, whilst in the second the basic geometric forms have been altered
in order to increase the possibilities of three-dimensional forms in space.
A particularly interesting feature of the medal is the interaction between more
conventional topological spaces and the imaginary references and interpretations
of the artist himself. The most interesting artists are those who unceasingly
reinvent and push their interpretations to their limits, not compromising their
identity but creating ever greater dialectic depth and potential. It could be
said that in some ways this approach reflects the development of the formal
aspects of art as language characterised by the Bauhaus school, but at the same
time some theoretical reflection regarding the limitations and possibilities
of its language is necessary, for without this the medal would continue to be
an unconsidered outcast.
It is as a result of these processes that the medal can pass beyond the realms
of being a mere craft product, to become a thought-provoking object and at the
same time a legitimate piece of art.
BODY AND MESSAGE [3]
Within the plastic arts the medal constitutes a genre conventionally identified
by the following characteristics. It is an intimate object that takes its scale
from that of the human hand (which is generally about ten centimetres across).
It is reproducible, by casting, striking or constructing. It has two sides,
which are symmetrical and parallel and derive from solid regular geometrical
shapes: the circle, square, or rectangle.
Over the last decade the medal in Portugal has become a more personal object
of investigation, less traditional in the sense that it is not so closely connected
with special occasions and orders. What began as an exercise in artistic expression
made special by its ability to be handled (the cast medal) has now become a
thought-provoking cultural object with its own special identity. The normative
conventionality of the genre has been transformed into a context for discussion.
The medal has an ever-growing autonomy.
In a world that is marked by the banality of its discursiveness, the very essence
of objects can be rediscovered through the medal. A medal can be a record of
the process of interacting with reality, but at the same time it conveys significant
amplifications, in terms of material existence, of the creator himself. The
challenge for the modern medal is that it should remain a valid comprehensible
exercise within the conformities of established plastic art, without abandoning
the power to disregard those principles when questioning the world that we all
share.

diversa é a qualidade.
do género medalhística.
Convencionalidade e singularidades do plano [2]
do sentido comum do termo.
o espartilho do legado tradicional desse específico género artístico. Isto resulta,an
do género:
- a medalha é um espaço de comunicação codificado;
derivado do corpo humano.
inúmeras potencialidades do plano.
Apresenta duas faces - verso e anverso - estruturalmentesimétricas e paralelas,
e a legenda.
A convencionalidade normativa
do género transformara-se no pretexto do discurso. A crescente autonomia permitiu
